Credit Card Return Protection Guide

Let’s say you buy a lamp from an expensive store. You are only to know that the store has a policy of not returning expensive purchases as quickly as possible.

This is where credit card return protection may begin, Only in cases I used a credit card that provided this coverage and provided lamp payments. Credit card return protection is an infamous, whimsical credit card perk and is increasingly unusual, so this benefit may not be present.

However, despite its extensive fine printing and exclusion, it is beneficial for consumers who are rethinking about their purchase. Read a summary of how credit card return protection works, typical fine prints for coverage, and hidden fine prints that apply when you submit a request.

What is credit card return protection?

Credit card return protection is a credit card perk that can be applied when making a purchase with a credit card that allows individuals to return purchases even if the retailer does not allow it. If the retailer allows returns, credit card return protection can also extend the time consumers will return items.

It is important to note that not all credit card issuers offer return protection as it is a dying perk in the credit card industry. Also, be aware that you just have a credit card with return protection and it’s not enough to use it. You will need to use your card to pay for the items you wish to return to apply.

If for some reason you used a different credit card and purchased a high priced lamp in this example, the return protection will not work. In addition to a considerable amount of fine printing, the fact that you need to use your card with this coverage for all eligible purchases to use is a major downside of the benefits of this credit card.

How does return protection work?

Processing a return request can be a tedious experience and depends on the card in question, the card issuer and the purchase. Credit card issuers still offering return protection tend to have broad rules that exclude some purchases.

If an item qualifies for a return, most issuers will request:

  • Credit card statement indicating that you have purchased with a card that offers return protection
  • Original receipt of purchase
  • Documents that attempted to return the purchase to the original retailer

Once you submit a request for credit card return protection, you may need to send the item to the credit card issuer for further evaluation. Normally, shipping costs must be paid in advance, but if a return protection request is approved, the costs can be refunded.

Rules and restrictions for credit card return protection

Credit card return protection rules are usually set up by credit card networks, and the same can be said about this coverage limit and exclusion. However, not all credit card networks have cards that offer credit card return protection, such as discovery cards and Mastercard. MasterCard once offered a version of this perk known as a “Satisfaction Guarantee,” but there are currently no consumer credit cards offering this coverage.

This presents a general terms and conditions for this coverage, along with an overview of major credit card issuers with products with return protection.

Conclusion

Credit card return protection gives you peace of mind when shopping for items that may not qualify for a refund. However, due to extensive fine printing and exclusion, this is a backup option for getting a refund, rather than a daily credit card perk. If you’re lucky when protecting returns, check if your credit card will offer you Purchase Protection.
