Discover it Miles vs. Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card Highlights

These two travel credit cards have similar offers, but there are some areas where one card appears before the other.

Which cards make the most money?

Both cards have the same rate of return on all purchases, so you can earn the same amount of rewards after the first year. However, depending on how the bonus works, the first year reward haul of your card will vary.

Discover it Miles vs. Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card Expense Example

To come up with an example of first-year rewards for both cards, let’s say you have a family of four with two adults under the age of 50 and two children between the ages of 9 and 11. According to the USDA, average food spending could be $1,024.90 per month on a moderate plan (or $12,298.80 per year).

Also, imagine spending $300 a month ($3,600 a year), $300 on travel ($3,600 a year), and $1,000 on other purchases ($12,000 a year).

Here’s what that spending looks like, and what you earn with cashback in your first year:

Credit Card Total annual spending Earned points/miles Welcome bonus won Total points/miles earned
Discover the miles $31,498 47,247 miles 47,247 miles (double the miles you earned within the first year of opening an account) 94,495 miles
Boa Travel Rewards $31,498 47,247 points 25,000 (after spending $1,000 on a purchase within the first 90 days of opening an account) 72,247 points

Each card earns 47,247 points or miles, thanks to a 1.5x point or miles reward rate.

However, if you add a bonus offer for each card, your first year reward will change.

  • The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card earns a total of 72,247 points in the first year, worth a total of $722.
  • With Discover It Miles, you earn a total of 94,495 miles in your first year, worth a total of $945.

Why do you need to discover it?

If you use your card for a significant amount each year, once you discover it, you can still have a heavy reward in your first year thanks to the bonus offer. However, there are many reasons to consider this card.

Why do you need to get a Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card?

Bank of America Travel Rewards cards may also be worth it. It’s definitely worth it, especially if you want to earn flexible rewards to skip interest payments on travel and purchases as long as possible.

Conclusion

These travel credit cards have similar rewards and features, and if you want to earn rewards, transfer balances, or avoid paying interest on your purchase for a limited time, one of them could be a good option. Another major bonus is that both Discover It Miles and Bank of America Rewards credit cards do not have annual fees and no foreign transaction fees.

That said, you should compare credit cards from Bank of America, Discover and other major issuers before you make a decision. If you are willing to pay the annual fee, you can find an elite travel credit card with better bonus offers and more perks.
